Before You Begin
Check System Requirements
Make sure your system meets the requirements
Before you begin, verify that your system meets these requirements:
Hardware Requirements: - Mac with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, or M4 chip) - At least 8GB RAM recommended - Sufficient storage for the virtual machine
Software Requirements: - macOS Sonoma or later - Claude Desktop app (latest version)
Subscription Requirements: - Claude Pro ($20/month) or Claude Max ($100/month) subscription
Install Claude Desktop
Download and install the Claude Desktop application
Download Claude Desktop: 1. Visit [claude.ai/download](https://claude.ai/download) 2. Click "Download for Mac" 3. Open the downloaded .dmg file 4. Drag Claude to your Applications folder
First Launch: 1. Open Claude from Applications 2. Sign in with your Anthropic account 3. Complete any initial setup prompts
Subscribe to Claude Pro or Max
Upgrade your account to access Cowork
Upgrade Your Subscription: 1. Go to [claude.ai/settings](https://claude.ai/settings) 2. Click on "Subscription" or "Upgrade" 3. Choose Claude Pro ($20/month) or Claude Max ($100/month) 4. Enter payment details and confirm
Note: Claude Cowork uses more tokens than regular chat. Max plan is recommended for heavy usage.
Enable Cowork in Claude Desktop
Activate the Cowork feature
Activate Cowork: 1. Open Claude Desktop 2. Click on Settings (gear icon) 3. Navigate to "Features" or "Beta Features" 4. Enable "Cowork" toggle 5. Accept any terms or permissions
First-Time Setup: - The app will download a Linux virtual machine (~2GB) - This may take several minutes depending on your connection - Wait for setup to complete before proceeding
Configure Folder Permissions
Grant Claude access to specific folders
Set Up Folder Access: 1. In Claude Desktop, go to Cowork Settings 2. Click "Add Folder" or "Grant Access" 3. Select folders you want Claude to work with 4. Common choices: - Documents folder - Downloads folder - A specific project folder
Security Best Practice: - Only grant access to folders you need - Avoid granting access to system folders - You can modify permissions anytime
Start Your First Cowork Session
Launch Cowork and give your first task
Starting a Session: 1. In Claude Desktop, click "New Cowork" or the Cowork icon 2. Wait for the virtual machine to boot 3. You'll see a Cowork interface instead of regular chat
Your First Task: Try a simple task to get started:
"Please organize my Downloads folder by moving all PDF files into a new folder called 'PDFs' and all images into a folder called 'Images'."
Watch It Work: - Claude will show you its plan - You'll see a log of actions as it works - Review the results when complete
Review Results and Action Log
Understand what Claude did
Reviewing the Work: 1. Check the action log to see every step Claude took 2. Verify the results match your expectations 3. Look for any errors or issues
Understanding the Log: - Each action is timestamped - You can see file operations, decisions made - Screenshots may be included
If Something Went Wrong: - Review the log for error messages - Try rephrasing your request - Be more specific about what you want

Common Issues & Solutions
Cowork option not appearing

Virtual machine taking too long to start
First boot downloads ~2GB. Ensure stable internet. Subsequent boots are faster.
Claude can't access my files
Check folder permissions in Cowork settings. You need to explicitly grant access to each folder.
Task seems stuck or unresponsive
Complex tasks may take time. Check the action log for progress. If truly stuck, cancel and retry with a simpler request.
